2026 MLB trade deadline rumors, news, live updates: Yankees reportedly acquire Luis García Jr.; Mets deal Freddy Peralta to Rays; Dodgers net ace Tarik Skubal from Tigers
The MLB trade deadline is fast approaching, with teams looking to improve their standing for a postseason run having until 6 p.m. ET Monday to make a move. And the fate of the biggest name on the block, two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, was decided Saturday night, as the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired the star ace in exchange for OF Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
It's a rental for the Dodgers, as Skubal is set to become a free agent this offseason and is expected to command a hefty payday. However, while they deal with knee and biceps injuries to star two-way player Shohei Ohtani, the move bolsters an already deep rotation with multiple viable starting options leading up to the postseason.
The Mets and Blue Jays, two of the biggest disappointments of the season, are expected to be sellers, and New York made a move on Sunday, sending Freddy Peralta to the Rays for a trio of prospects. On the other side of town, the Yankees are reportedly acquiring slugging Washington Nationals infielder Luis García Jr. for a package of pitchers.
A few other trades trickled in before Saturday night's Skubal blockbuster, including Boston's acquisition of Curtis Mead, which backfired immediately when he sustained a fractured wrist in his first game with the Red Sox.

The defending AL champs made their first major subtraction ahead of the deadline in deciding to trade Gausman before he reaches free agency this winter. It’s a somber conclusion to a tremendously successful tenure in Toronto for the right-hander, who didn’t miss a single turn through the Blue Jays rotation since signing a five-year, $110 million free-agent deal; only Logan Webb and Dylan Cease have made more regular-season starts since the beginning of 2022.
No matter the prospects coming back, this was always going to be a difficult and emotional farewell to a pitcher who endeared himself to the community and fan base at every turn. But trading Gausman is an entirely reasonable decision for the Jays to make given the circumstances, and Toronto landed two intriguing minor-league position players worth monitoring for the future, even if the chances of them making a Gausman-like impact are microscopic.
Bateman is a center fielder; Southisene a shortstop. Southisene bats righty; Bateman swings left-handed. Bateman is three years older. The biographic details differ on the surface, but the pros and cons of their profiles as prospects are remarkably similar. The topline question for both is simple: Can their defense at premium positions, plus speed and exceptional knack for reaching base overcome a lack of raw power at the plate?
If Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer had one goal ahead of this year’s trade deadline, it was to add the type of starting pitcher that a team in win-now mode needs and deserves. And on the eve of the trade deadline, we can now say that he has done just that. The Chicago Cubs landed one of the best rentals on the market Sunday, acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays for prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene.
Gausman, 35, checks a lot of boxes for the Cubs, who have also acquired pitchers David Peterson and Aaron Civale in recent weeks. Not only is Gausman the type of frontline starting pitcher that Chicago’s rotation has been missing, but what’s more, for a team looking to go deep into October, he has the postseason pedigree that is sought after by every contender.
Chicago’s newly acquired right-hander is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season, but his 3.51 FIP would suggest that he has been a bit unlucky thus far in 2026. In his postseason career, Gausman has a 3.83 ERA with 56 strikeouts across 56 ⅓ innings.
The Braves are reportedly adding to their starting pitching depth, acquiring Tyler Mahle from the Giants in exchange for reliever Anthony Molina.
The Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired SP Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
The right-hander has started 23 games so far this season. He has a 5-10 record with a 4.38 ERA and has struck out 127 batters in 127 1/3 innings of work.
Gausman is in the final year of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with Toronto ahead of the 2022 season.
The Athletic's Mitch Bannon reported that the return going back to Toronto is OF Brett Bateman and INF Ty Southisene.
Tarik Skubal made his first public appearance as a Dodger on Sunday. He joined the Dodgers’ dugout for Sunday’s game against the Red Sox decked out in a blue Dodgers hoodie and cap.
Dodgers C Dalton Rushing is just dealing with 'minor arm irritation'
Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing was a late scratch for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, hours before Monday's MLB trade deadline. But it doesn't sound like another Dodgers blockbuster is in the works — at least not one involving Rushing.
Per the Dodgers, he's simply dealing with "minor arm irritation" and has been given the day off.
The Nationals demonstrated with their first trade of this deadline (Curtis Mead for Connelly Early) that they are willing to part with current offensive contributors if it means adding upgrades on the mound, where the organization is desperately seeking both depth and upside. That pattern continued with the move to ship Garcia to the Bronx in exchange for four pitchers, including three relievers who could help patch up Washington's shoddy bullpen in the short and long term.
Yovanny Cruz and Ben Grable are the prizes here. Grable just represented New York at the All-Star Futures Game and has dominated in relief since being selected in the 11th round out of Indiana University last year. His terrific fastball-slider combo and solid command have enabled a 38.4% strikeout rate and 0.85 WHIP, which both rank among the top 30 of minor-league arms with at least 30 innings pitched. Cruz's stuff is even louder, with a fastball that has climbed to 102 mph; only three pitchers have thrown more triple-digit heaters than Cruz (82) in Triple-A this season. He made his MLB debut earlier this season but has mostly been in the minors' top level trying to hone his control enough to be trusted in leverage situations in the majors. The Nationals will have far more patience for helping him reach that back end of the bullpen potential than New York did, which is why he was a sensible inclusion in this deal.
Jake Bird, 30, is the only non-prospect of the bunch. He arrived from Colorado at last year's trade deadline but has struggled to establish himself in New York's deep bullpen, ultimately shuttling back and forth between the majors and Triple-A. But he has a lengthier track record of getting late-inning outs than most of what Washington currently has in its bullpen, and it's not unreasonable to think the low-slot right-hander can regain his solid form if given the opportunity with the Nats. He's under contract through 2028.
Heading into last offseason, Luis García Jr. was an afterthought, a legitimate nontender candidate. The new regime in D.C. had zero connection to the former top prospect, whose career had stalled out big time for an aimless Nats team. In nearly 2,300 plate appearances as a big leaguer, the Dominican infielder was a below-league-average hitter whose second-base defense was both ugly and untenable. He looked like somebody in need of a new start, a change of scenery.
But the new Nats front office and coaching staff saw a reclamation project worth undertaking. The result has been a resurgent 2026 season in which García, now a full-time first baseman, has delivered career highs in nearly every relevant offensive category. He's swinging the bat harder, making contact with more force and barreling the ball up more often. García, 26, still hates a walk and is prone to go fishing outside the zone, but in the main, this is an impactful offensive player capable of hitting in the middle of a contender's lineup.
Which is exactly why he's now playing for the New York Yankees.
The Bronx Bombers made García their first major deadline acquisition on Sunday, sending a quartet of right-handed hurlers to Washington in exchange for his services. It's an interesting fit, given that the Yankees' injury-riddled lineup is currently relying quite heavily on two different first basemen: Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt.
Yankees reportedly trade for slugging Nationals INF Luis García Jr.
The New York Yankees reached a deal on Sunday to acquire slugging Washington Nationals infielder Luis García Jr. for a package of pitchers, according to multiple reports.
Per those reports, the Yankees will send right-handed relievers Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird and right-handed starter Jack Cebert to Washington in return. Bird, 30, is a five-season MLB veteran. The rest of the pitchers in the deal are prospects.
The report of the deal confirmed earlier reports that the two sides were discussing a trade. García was a late scratch for Sunday's Nationals game against the Atlanta Braves amid those reports.
García, 26, is in the midst of a breakout season in his seventh MLB campaign and provides the Yankees with another productive bat. Through 104 games, García is slashing .283/.313/.560 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI. His .560 slugging percentage leads the National League.
New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes made one more minor-league rehab start on Sunday for high-A Brooklyn. He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits on 73 pitches and appeared fully recovered from the broken right fibula he sustained in May.
The question now becomes whether his next start will be for the Mets or a new team. The Mets traded fellow starter Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
In three rehab starts, Holmes pitched 11 2/3 innings with 4 runs (3.09 ERA), 12 hits and 7 walks allowed.
Playing in the second year of a three-year, $38 million deal with the Mets, Holmes can opt out of his contract after this season.
A slightly awkward side effect of the Freddy Peralta trade? The Mets had a jersey giveaway for the starting pitcher scheduled for later this month. Replica Peralta jerseys would’ve been given out to the first 15,000 fans in attendance.
The promotion, which was set for the Mets' home game against the Padres on Aug. 19, has been removed from the team's website. It's unclear what will happen to the jerseys.
Yankees reportedly eyeing deal for Nationals INF Luis García Jr.
The New York Yankees are seeking to complete a trade for Washington Nationals infielder Luis García Jr., according to multiple reports.
Garcia was a late scratch for Sunday's Nationals game against the Atlanta Braves and went to the tunnel during the game, according to The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum.
Garcia, 26, is in the midst of a breakout season in his seventh MLB campaign and would provide the Yankees with another productive bat. Through 104 games, García is slashing .283/.313/.560 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI. His .560 slugging percentage leads the National League.
It's not clear where he would play for the Yankees. He has played primarily at first base this season but has also played shortstop and second base during his Nationals career.
Blue Jays acquire former Cubs SP Jameson Taillon, who was DFA'd last week
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired starting pitcher Jameson Taillon and cash considerations in a trade with the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The Blue Jays announced the trade on Sunday. Further details have not been announced or reported.
The move arrives six days after the Cubs designated Taillon for assignment. Taillon, the No. 2 pick in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, is in the midst of his worst MLB season at 34 years old. In 15 starts with the Cubs, he posted a 5.92 ERA and 1.355 WHIP with 68 strikeouts, 27 walks and 25 home runs allowed in 76 innings pitched.
Pitre is a wonderfully fun player, a Québécois who starred in the SEC at Kentucky and has continued to be an on-base machine since entering pro ball. His overall impact is capped by a lack of raw power and the likelihood that he's only a second baseman, but his excellent plate discipline and contact skills from the left side and his plus speed on the basepaths have him tracking like a useful utility player at worst. And if his pure hit tool proves to be near elite at the highest level, the way it has in the minors this year, he could be a low-end regular at the keystone. He was promoted to Double-A last month and could be in the mix to debut at some point in 2027.
Hill is now a cool homecoming story, having grown up in Westchester County. His development has been a slow burn since he was drafted out of high school in 2022. After a successful full season in High-A in 2025, Hill pitched for Team Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic and has spent most of this season in Double-A. His calling card is his command and a really good slider, but he has struggled to find consistent whiffs as he has climbed the minor-league ladder, especially with his low-to-mid-90s fastball. The Mets have done quite well developing pitchers lately, so don't be surprised if Hill takes a leap under their tutelage, but it could take some time before he becomes a factor in Queens.
A strong pro debut in the Mariners’ organization after being drafted out of a Texas high school in 2023 prompted Smith's inclusion in the Randy Arozarena trade at the 2024 deadline, but the righty-hitting outfielder has stagnated somewhat since joining the Rays organization. The selling point remains that he's a plus runner with above-average power who has a chance to stick in center field, but consistent production has been lacking, and he's striking out way too much at present. He just turned 22 and has yet to reach Double-A, so this is New York buying low on a promising athlete, rather than a safe bet to develop into a big-league contributor the way Pitre is trending. — Shusterman
After losing the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes, Tampa Bay pivoted swiftly, acquiring arguably the second-best hurler on the free-agent market. It has been a bizarre, disappointing season for Freddy Peralta, who joined the Mets via trade from Milwaukee last winter to great fanfare. The righty was coming off a strong half-decade of performance for the Brewers. He was expected to lead the line for a Mets club with high expectations and a higher payroll.
Instead, Peralta became one of the many faces of a most woeful few months in Queens. After rocking a 3.30 ERA between 2021 and 2026, the gregarious Dominican slogged to a 4.99 across 22 forgettable starts with the Mets. His strikeout rate has dipped, he’s giving up more hard contact, and he’s conjuring way fewer whiffs.
Most concerningly, to a layman’s eye, it’s difficult to pinpoint why exactly such a dependable arm took such a definitive step back. Peralta’s stuff is only slightly down. His mix hasn’t changed. His arm angle has dropped just slightly. It’s a weird one. And it’s now Tampa Bay’s responsibility to carry. Given the organization’s track record of pitching development, nobody would be surprised if pitching coach Kyle Snyder and his staff get Peralta back on track. They’ve done more with less many times over.
Given Tampa Bay’s status atop the mess that is the American League in 2026, this was a deal they absolutely had to make. The Rays have about as clear a path to the pennant as they’ve had for quite some time. Opportunities such as this don’t come knocking often. Peralta will slot right into their rotation, replacing the recently injured Shane McClanahan, and should start the second or third playoff game come October.
Should the Rays have been more involved in Skubal? Probably. A bit more aggression could have gone a long way. But at least they aren’t completely sitting on their hands. Peralta, even this diminished version, makes them better. And if the Rays can make the necessary tweaks, this could be a real game-changer come playoff time.
In return for sending Freddy Peralta to Tampa Bay, the Mets will receive a trio of prospects, per multiple reports. Outfielder Aidan Smith, right-handed pitcher Gary Gill Hill and second baseman Émilien Pitre will all head to New York as part of the trade.
Smith, the Rays' 15th-best prospect, currently plays for the team's high-A affiliate. Gill Hill and Pitre — No. 26 and 27 on the Rays' prospect list, respectively — both play at the Double-A level.

San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez is a target for several playoff contenders, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
The Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies are all showing interest in the eight-year veteran who can be a free agent after the season.
Arraez, 29, is a three-time MLB batting champion and currently leading the majors with a .328 average. He can also play first base, third base and left field, but prefers to stay at second base, according to Heyman.
That makes him a difficult fit for the New York Yankees, who would also like to add Arraez, but have Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base.
